Do you play an orchestral instrument? Sort of?

Squawkestra is a community orchestra for adults who are beginning to learn or returning to playing music.

Levels of musical experience range from absolute beginners, those returning after many years of hiatus, or players looking for performance experience on their 2nd, (3rd or 4th!) instrument. Rehearsals take place fortnightly at the lovely Northcote Senior Citizen’s Centre at 18A Bent street Northcote. All orchestra members pay an annual membership fee and we accept new members at all times of the year.

The orchestra aims to provide an opportunity to play music at a beginner level to grade 3 and beyond. Rehearsals are fun and relaxed. There are no auditions to join. Repertoire is mostly classical and includes a varied contemporary repertoire. A bunch of good folks attend each rehearsal and at break times we all enjoy a cuppa, a natter and great home made cakes.

The orchestra regularly presents concerts for friendly audiences and enjoys working with a number of guest artists and conductors through out the year. There are also opportunities to make music in chamber ensembles, duets and solos.

Squawkestra was founded by Becca Smith and Linda Parlane in November 2006 with a group of 5 string players. Becca and Linda worked to establish the orchestra, collecting members along the way from varied backgrounds, experience and interests, and we thank them for their vision and name.

The group then became a full orchestra under the Musical Directorship and Conducting of Andrea Simpson, who established the musical vision of the orchestra and many concerts. Squawkestra flourished to a membership of around 50 players, under Artistic Director Katrina Wilson O’Brien.

In 2021 Kat passed the baton to our current Musical Director and Conductor, Carl Polke.
